Sailing the Eighth Sea [Poetry: Anytime, Anyplace…]

Poetry: Anytime, Anyplace, About Anything – Sailing the Eighth Sea

Today’s NaPoWriMo challenge was to write a sea shanty. I decided to throw in a little bit of yesterday’s prompt [a poem based on a lie] as well. The result: “Sailing the Eighth Sea”

Sailing the Eighth Sea

Well, you’ve probably heard a lots of
sailors, tellin’ lots O’ tales,
‘Bout all the dangers they have faced
when riding high up on those sails.

They say they’ve sailed the seven seas
and seen the ocean black and blue,
That they’ve survived the perfect storm
and escaped terrible pirates too.

These tall tales they’ll tell you,
drinkin’ at the tavern in yer town,
Singin’ ‘bout drunken sailors, pretty
lasses, and blowin’ the man down.

They’ll mention Davey Jones’ locker
and tell ya ‘bout the devil down below,
But I am here to tell ya ‘bout things
that few sailors even know.

I have sailed the seven seas with the
best O’ them it’s true,
But unlike those other sailors, I’ve sailed
the eighth sea too!

I’ve sailed on stranger tides than
any sailor ever has before,
Where not only does the water keep
a movin’, but also the shore!

Where Sirens are afraid to
risk Poseidon’s wrath,
In these waters, not even the
Kraken would take a bath.

Yes, the eighth sea is a place where
not even spirits would reside,
You can take my word on this, I
swear I’ve never lied.

Now folks they don’t believe me tale,
even though it is all true,
I guess the prospect is too terrifying,
that there’s a sea they never knew.

They’d rather sat in taverns, drinkin’
the rum and ale all dry,
Then to learn ‘bout the eighth sea,
where even ghosts can die.

So, hats off to those peg-leg arses,
who claim that I am crazy,
I’ll get me supplies and be off, to
go sail that eighth sea!

Note: I do know that are numerous bodies of water that are classified as seas [more than seven or eight], but the poem is just for fun.

Now this one is just fun! Love the mixture of myth, lore, and sailor superstition. Like the ‘eighth sea’ a nice change of pace from the seven seas. Love it!
