Gunboat Diplomat [Poetry: Anytime, Anyplace...]

Poetry: Anytime, Anyplace, About Anything – Gunboat Diplomat

By, Donna M. Monnig

NaPoWriMo’s challenge for Day Four was to write a poem using the name of one of science fiction writer Iain M. Banks’ space ship’s for the title of the poem.

I couldn’t stop with  just one of his space ship names, so I intermingled parts of some others throughout my poem “Gunboat Diplomat” as well.

Space Ship

Gunboat Diplomat

She flies, she roams, up
            in that cold embrace
                        of space.

An arsenal decorates
            her armored hull,
Though currently the
            fighting is at a lull.

Ever a contradiction
            – never a surprise –
That this foreign vessel
            is a bodyguard of lies.

The machine gun preacher
            keeps bullets and bible near,
Though a contradiction, his
            purpose remains clear.

This ship, too, is
            much like that,
Calling herself, The
            Gunboat Diplomat.

She flies, she roams, up
            in that cold embrace
                        of space.

Under the guise of white
            she waves truce –
All who oppose, she
            tightens the noose.

An unfortunate conflict
            of interest ensues,
Keeping peace through force;
            no exchange of views.

A fine disregard for
            normal moral constraints,
An irregular reality is
            the picture she paints.

She flies, she roams, up
            in that cold embrace
                        of space.

Just another victim
            lightly seared – subtly,
Conversely, she was built
            for benevolent morality.

Refreshingly unhindered, by
            any one government – free.
But an abundance of power
            corrupts all, eventually.

She flies, up in space
            containing others in
                        her cold embrace.

Awesome! I love science fiction, I love poetry, and I love this whole idea! Love how you reversed the order of the first stanza and the last stanza to reflect the meaning of the poem. Really enjoyed it!
