Tanka? No Thank Ya [Poetry: Anytime, Anyplace…]

Poetry: Anytime, Anyplace, About Anything – Tanka? No Thank Ya

By, Donna M. Monnig

Today’s NaPoWriMo prompt was to write a tanka, which is a poem based on the syllable pattern 5-7-5-7-7. For Day Eleven I give you “Tanka? No Thank Ya.”

A cup of tea

Tanka? No Thank Ya

Poems based on syllables
Not my cup of tea, I say.
What is the telos?
There is no point, said my muse,
So, next time, let me please choose.

Just choose words next time,
Of syllables worry not.
Do free verse or rhyme,
Just write of what you have thought.
Free expression is no crime.

Shakespeare had sonnets;
Berryman had dreamsongs too;
Some even write haiku.
I may not be famous but
I will write in my own way.

  1. Ahahaha I wrote something similar to this, but mine is whiney, not as elegant as yours lol. Really, haikus and tankas will be the death of me. =/

      Yeah, that line just didn’t sound right with five, and hey there are a couple of pretty popular tankas out there that have six and eight syllable lines mixed throughout.
      So, to quote, or parahrase, Picasso (I think it was him), you have to know the rules like a pro in order to break them like an artist (or something like that). So, I knew the rules but I chose to break them in the name of artistic style. Sounds good, right?
      Thanks for reading!
      God Bless,
