So Far, So Good

So Far, So Good
By Donna M. Monnig

So far, so good,
he said, falling.
Always falling, it
seemed, but never
all the way down.
Everything was
good, in his opinion,
but then, he had
yet to hit the
A gambler.
Taking chances,
sleight of hand,
Find the Lady –
Five Card Stud.
Town to town,
a pack of cards
and a man-eating
horse, misleadingly
answered to Bud.
So far, so good,
the standard reply,
said with laconic
flair. Luck and
charm, he had it all.
Inherent risk in chance,
No ace in the hole.
Death came like
dynamite. Ironic:
he didn’t fall.
So far, so good,
no more.
