Recipe for a Gunfight
By Donna M. Monnig

One game of poker,
Two men double the bet,
A teaspoon of insult,
A tablespoon of threat.

One misplaced card,
A dash of accusation,
Simmering tempers,
Boil into causation.

Two cups of courage,
Three ounces of dread,
Four shots of bravery,
Six bullets of lead.

One hour: High noon,
One sun baked street,
Twenty folks watching,
Two gunmen meet.

Dust stirred together,
Let the tension raise,
Two gunshots echo,
One hit and one graze.

One target falls hard,
One target remains.
A pinch of regret,
Four hands bloodstained.
