Song Review: “For You” – Keith Urban

By, Donna M. Monnig

Singer-songwriter Keith Urban debuted his new song, For You, at the 47th Annual Academy of Country Music Awards. For You, is a touching song that tugs at the heart.

From the opening lines to the last verse, For You, paints a vivid picture of the courage, kinship, and sacrifice shared between soldiers, the Navy SEALs in particular.

The chorus pretty much says it all:

“And I wonder would I give my life?
Could I make that sacrifice?
If it came down to it could I take the bullet?
I would, yes I would. For You.”

Urban co-wrote the song with Monty Powell. For You was written to go with the major motion picture, Act of Valor, and is played during the closing credits of the film.

Urban was quoted on his website [keithurban.net] saying: “I felt so privileged and honored to have been given the opportunity to be a part of Act Of Valor and to shine a different kind of light on the work that the SEALS do.”

The first verse of the song shows the “different kind of light” that Urban is talking about:

“All I saw was smoke and fire, I didn’t feel a thing, but suddenly I was rising higher.
And I felt like I just made the biggest mistake: when I thought about my unborn child. When I thought about my wife.
And the answer rang out clear from somewhere up above.
No greater gift has man, than to lay down his life for love.”

It’s so hard to imagine having the courage to make that kind of decision. To know that your family is waiting on you back home, but to also know that the man next to you has his own family waiting for him as well, the song clearly illustrates this in the line: “There’s a brother on my left, and another on my right. /And in his pocket just like mine, he’s got a photograph and they’re waiting for him back home.”

The music accompanying the lyrics is beautiful and adds such a haunting feeling as you listen, you can picture it all happening in your mind’s eye. However, even better than simply listening to the song is watching the official music video [click here to view], in which, scenes from the movie are expertly woven into the song while Keith Urban and band perform in the middle of a desert as explosions rain down on the landscape behind them.

Urban will be donating all of his artist and publishing royalties for this song to the Navy SEAL Foundation.

For You is a powerful song that resonates a deeper meaning into what it takes to fight for your country, your family, and your friends.

“Greater love has no man than this, that he lay down his life for a brother.” – John 15:13

Thanks for this great review. I am a long time, big time, Keith Urban fan. For You is one of his best, IMO. I heard this song when it was first released, saw the movie (twice), and take every opportunity to view the video, which thanks to your link I just viewed again. I see it’s now been viewed well over 1 million times. To come upon this review today, Memorial Day, of all days is very appropriate. I thank you again for doing it and hope that it will bring Keith to the attention of new fans worldwide.

Donna, thanks so much for writing this about FOR YOU on your blog! I love the song very much and I also saw the movie and both are very, very powerful to me. It puts a lot of things about war and patriotism in a new light for me! I admit I went to see the movie because Keith had the song in it, but I cried and laughed along with everyone in the theatre. At the end, the audience clapped and I felt so much pride for those men and what they have done for us. Keith did capture all of that in his song! God Bless all military men and women that they do lay down their lives for us everyday!!

    • Hi Gloria,
I’m so glad you liked my review, it’s good to know that people like it! I absolutely love this song and the music video was so well done as well.
I haven’t had a chance to see the movie yet, I just bought the novelization of it today though, so I hope to, both, read the book and see the movie very, very soon.
I agree, we can’t thank the brave men and women who defend our country enough!
      God Bless,
      Donna
